N2 Roadtrip day 1, Portugal
Onwards towards Faro
After an extremely peaceful night in our riverside spot in Chaves, the hum of our Adria motorhome, Alma, filled the quiet morning air as we embarked on our N2 adventure.
Our journey began at Km 0 roundabout, right next to the bar we had frequented just yesterday – a symbolic starting point in the heart of Portugal.
As we ventured into the unknown, a sense of excitement and anticipation filled the air, can this journey really live up to the billing of ‘epic road trip’
Our first stop was just a few km into the drive, Pedras Salgadas, a hidden gem nestled amidst lush forests and crystal-clear streams.
This tranquil retreat offered the perfect opportunity to unwind and rejuvenate.
The park, with its stunning Art Nouveau architecture, is a sight to behold.
We spent the morning exploring the grounds, admiring the beautiful buildings, and relaxing by the serene lake.
A leisurely stroll through the park’s serene trails was the perfect way to unwind and soak in the natural beauty of the surroundings.
As we immersed ourselves in the serene ambiance of Pedras Salgadas, we couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a unique place.
After a relaxing day walk though the park we continued our journey along the N2.
The road wound its way through picturesque villages and rolling hills, offering breathtaking views of the Portuguese countryside.
We marveled at the charming architecture, the vibrant local culture.
A home for the night in the heart of the Douro valley
As the sun began to set, we arrived in the charming village of Santa Marta de Penaguião, in the heart of the Douro valley.
This historic village , with its narrow cobblestone streets and ancient buildings, offered a glimpse into Portugal’s rich past.
We found a cozy spot to park Alma in the freely provided motorhome site and settled in for the night, eager to explore the town’s attractions the following day. (N 41.2057, W 7.78635)
Having popped into the local tourist information office, to acquire our N2 passport stamp, we also collect a local hiking route map.
We decided to follow the PR7 walking route. This well-marked trail led us through vineyards, olive groves, and picturesque villages.
As we hiked, mainly uphill – we couldn’t help but marvel at the breathtaking views of the Douro Valley.
Our first day on the N2 was a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.
The stunning scenery, the warm hospitality, and the unique experiences we encountered have made this journey truly unforgettable.
We can’t wait to see what adventures await us on the road ahead tomorrow.
