N2 Road Trip – Abrantes
Alma the Adria is in a prime spot overlooking the river, what we have noticed so far on our Portugal Road trip is that most town are providing some sort of motorhome aire and this is no real acceptation, a great service area, but sadly only two designated spaces, but that hasn’t stopped everyone else using the rest of the near empty carpark. Abrantes, a historic city nestled on the banks of the Tagus River, is a captivating destination for history buffs and culture enthusiasts.
Situated along the iconic N2 road, which we have managed to follow all the way from KM 0 in Chaves , this charming town offers a glimpse into Portugal’s rich past.
From our riverside pitch, the imposing Castelo de Abrantes, perched atop a hill, dominates the city skyline.
This medieval fortress offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Its strategic location overlooking the Tagus River has made it a vital defensive position throughout history.
The castle’s origins can be traced back to the 12th century, when it was built by the Knights Templar. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone numerous modifications and expansions.
Today, visitors can explore its imposing walls, ancient dungeons, and breathtaking panoramic views, but not on Mondays in the winter.
One of the most popular attractions within the castle grounds is the iconic swing.
Perched high above the city, the swing offers a thrilling and unforgettable experience.
As you soar through the air, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the Tagus River and the surrounding countryside.
As we continued our journey along the N2, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for the next adventure.
Each town and village offered its unique charm and historical significance.
The N2, a road slightly less traveled by tourist is proving to be a hidden gem, offering a truly authentic Portuguese experience.
Paul.
