A rest in Isla Cristina

Our recent motorhome trip down the N2 in Portugal has sadly ended, leaving an awkward choice more Portugal or back into Spain ?

Luck or possible indecision took us to the charming coastal town of Isla Cristina, where Alma the Adria has settled in at the well-equipped Camper Park Playas de Luz, along with an almost completely German set of neighbours (N 37.2221, W 7.32343)

This idyllic location provided the perfect base for exploring the surrounding region, we were treated to stunning views of the vast salt marshes that stretch towards the horizon.

These shimmering salt flats, a testament to the region’s unique ecosystem, created a mesmerizing backdrop to our stay.

One of the things that particularly caught our interest was Via Verde, a former railway line converted into a scenic cycling path, offered a unique opportunity to experience the Andalusian countryside. Starting from the nearby town at the bottom of the site, the route winds its way through picturesque landscapes, passing through charming villages, lush pine forests, and expansive wetlands.

We spent a glorious day cycling along the Via Verde towards Ayamonte . The path is mostly flat, making it suitable for cyclists of all levels. We enjoyed the tranquility of the route, over the salt flats. The fresh air, and the stunning scenery.

Ayamonte’s proximity to the Portuguese border has created a rather unique cultural identity.

The town’s architecture, a mix of Spanish and Portuguese influences, creates a charming and eclectic ambiance.

But it’s the town’s vibrant atmosphere that truly sets it apart.

With its lively plazas, colorful houses, and the constant hum of activity, Ayamonte has a distinctly Latin American feel, reminiscent of Mexico we visited many years ago.

The opposite direction was and is just as beautiful, as we pedaled along, we were captivated by the ever-changing scenery.

The now sandy path meandered through a landscape of busy poly tunnels cultivating the next long awaited crop of juicy strawberries, there is literally miles of tunnels with dark, vibrant green plants waiting to fruit.

Our journey culminated in Islantilla, a charming coastal resort known for its beautiful beaches.

As we approached Islantilla, we could see the glistening sands of the Atlantic Ocean shimmering in the distance, although sadly at this time of the year it all a bit closed up for winter.

Spinning around we head to one of the charming villages along the route in search of a ‘Cafe con leche’and our stop is the village of La Redondela did not disappoint.

Being that it was Christmas and new year time we were in a relaxed frame of mind, so aimless wondering around the jaw dropping town of Isla Cristina a few times wasn’t an issue, a delightful blend of sun, sea, and Spanish charm.

The town’s main draw is undoubtedly its stunning coastline. Kilometers of pristine beaches, such as Playa Central and Playa de la Gaviota, invite sunbathers, swimmers, and watersports enthusiasts.

And let’s not forget it’s also a massive and thriving fishing port, where you can witness the daily arrival of fishing boats laden with fresh catches.

  • Ah, Isla Cristina! We’ve stayed several times in Camping Giralda. An easy cycle into town to haggle for fresh fish at the market. Is there anything tastier than sea-bass fresh off the BBQ..? 😄 Thanks for bringing back some lovely memories. Safe travels!
