Our First Spanish Market

Paloma our motorhome, is sheltering from the current high winds in the Costa Brava. We are parked on the amazing Camperstop in Palomas which is more aliked to a mini campsite offering everything you could need for €12 per night and if you stay for 11 nights the telwelth is free.(N 41.857400 E 3.114670)

One thing we have learnt over the last few months is when we visit a new country we want to get a feel for it as quickly as possible.

  • Who lives there?
  • What are they like?
  • And how do they dress?

In my experience, one of the best ways to get a really good idea of the local people is by visiting the main market.

By just mingling you can observe a lot of things about the local culture, and quickly feel in touch with a different society and today was no acceptation, here in Palomas Tuesday is market day.

One of the highlights of the town is the gorgeous Covered Central Market. But better still on a Tuesday the surrounding streets came alive and what is created is one of the most beautiful and lively markets I’ve visited in Europe(so far).

The mix of stalls and small bars with the alluring smell of fresh coffee and restaurants make it a place you could easily spend the morning, and as were lucky enough to be visiting in our motorhome, we have stocked up on some of the area’s best seafood, fruits, and vegetables for our weekly shop !

People were shouting, laughing, joking and going about daily life, carefully choosing their fresh looking purchases from the huge array of stalls. The bars spilled out onto the streets even on the windy November morning with lovely lively locals all chowing down on the most delicious looking breakfast pastries.

Stunned by all the affortable prices and the opulent choice of produce  the intention that we actually only need a few bits and bobs was quickly replaced by the wish and the occasion just to take home everything and stuff the fridge full.

Just along the Main Street the stalls continue offering a huge selection of clothes, shoes and more handbags than anyone would ever need !

Paul.
